President’s Message
Greetings, all. Hope you’ve had a great summer. We’ve had a wonderful summer including a trip to Nova Scotia, where I bought some yarn (of course) that has been added to the stash. But I am doing better. Last time I bought yarn from 3 different places, and this time I only bought yarn twice. So, that feels like progress to me.
I’m looking forward to another year of great programs and workshops. Lynne has pulled together some good offerings for the group, and Linda is busy working to fill in the program schedule, but what I see so far looks great. If you have any ideas for programs or can lend a hand please reach out to Linda.
This year I thought we’d try something new – a monthly survey. It’ll be quick and easy, with just a single question each month designed to help us learn more about the membership. This month’s question is “How did you learn about the guild?” I’m betting some might have learned about us through Gathering of the Guilds, or a class at MAC, or saw us doing a demo somewhere. I learned about the guild from a guild member (Phoebe McAfee). How did you learn about us? Take the survey now at https://forms.gle/ghPmzxGYqDK64wtW9.
One final note this month. We’re still looking for a sales person(s) to take on the spring sale at Gathering of the Guilds. So far no one has stepped forward, but the larger GotG group is starting to meet this month, and we need someone to represent the guild there and help coordinate our efforts. If no one is willing to help with this then we will have to drop out of the event. I think that would be a shame, but an event of that size takes some planning, and we’ll need to decide soon if we’ll take part this year so that GotG can make other plans and adjust accordingly if we need to drop out. Please, if you have any interest at all in helping out let me know. You won’t be working alone. There’s a great group of member artists who will work with you. So give it some thought and drop me an email if you have questions or think you might be able to help out.

The September Beginning Rigid Heddle Workshop is full.
As of Aug 22, there are 4 spots left in Natalie Drummond’s Deflected Doubleweave Workshop (https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/events/deflected-doubleweave-workshop/), October 15-16 . In a few weeks I will open it to non-guild members, and, as it is a Zoom workshop, it should sell right out. Sign up now! In Memoriam
Lee Jensen, Blithe Jensen’s husband, passed away early August. He had been ill for quite some time, but died from pneumonia. Blithe has been his full time care giver for years and now will have more time to weave her 40 yard warps.
Demonstrators Needed Labor Day Weekend!!!
Art in the Pearl is fast approaching!! We need lots more volunteers to help out, September 3, 4 or 5, Saturday through Monday. Please come and give a few hours to help spread the word about weaving and resources offered by our Guild!! We get lots of interest from the public when they see our members weaving on a variety of looms. Some show interest in our upcoming sales events and some want information on how to get started weaving. We always have a variety of small looms there for you to work on or show others how to do it. Or you can bring your own small loom and project along! It’s a fun way to get to know some other members in the Guild a little better. Spend a few hours demonstrating weaving then wander through this great art show that brings talented, creative artists from around the country.

Membership News
Hello everyone!
With September knocking on our door it is time for me to remind everyone (if you haven’t already) to renew your PHG membership. You can do this very easily online for immediate renewal or you are welcome to send in a check to us at our PO Box (this does take some time for things to be delivered, then deposited, then changed in the system).
Don’t forget all of the amazing things that come with your renewed membership! You get access to our very extensive library, you can rent or borrow the equipment we have in our closet (there are different sections of things that are either rental or borrow), you have access to our incredible workshops, and you help us pay for the amazing presenters we have speak each month and both the zoom link and the room we host these meetings in.
To our members who have already renewed their membership thank you so much! We appreciate your investment in our Guild! And to our newest members, Welcome! We are so glad you are here and hope to see you at our upcoming meetings!

Library and Rental News
We had hoped that when we moved the day meetings from the small Room 7 to the Gym that we would be able to have the library available during the whole meeting. However, that is not to be. The old library cart was not able to handle the rough terrain into the gym. (For the gory details, see the June newsletter.) On an even lower note, the library won’t be available during the meeting for the evening meeting either, as it is in the gym as well. The library will be available after the day meeting in the hallway as it had been in the past. In the evening, the library will be available from 6:30 to 7 in the hallway in front of the guild closet. I know this is not what we would like. We would like it to be in with the meeting. If someone can come up with a ramping system ….
On the bright side, my father-in-law was kind enough to make us a new cart. It is 3 feet long rather than 4 foot long like the old cart. It also has taller shelves, so no prying items out, and is a little bit deeper to keep things from being knocked off when going through doorways. It should be lighter than the old cart and easier to maneuver. This means our shelf space is somewhat reduced. The Needlework section, as well as the periodicals, Prairie Wool Companion, Weaver’s, Warp and Weft, and Piecework are not on the shelves. If you need an item from these collections, please ask Robin for assistance retrieving it from the closet. The plan is to move to three shorter carts from the two larger, which will give us more shelf space. Now I just need to come up with bribes along with cooler weather so we can get more shelves built.
We also have a few pieces of new equipment for rent and in our tool library. The large donation we received in May not only came with the yarn that was available for sale in June, it came with some new weaving equipment. Now available to rent are a Schacht horizontal warping mill and a 30” Ashford rigid heddle loom. Unlike our other rigid heddle looms, this one is set up for set up for a double heddle option with 3 different reed sizes. New in the tool library are a batik waxing tool and an Incredible Rope Machine. Take advantage of our collection to try before you buy.
If you have read a new or old weaving, spinning, dyeing or other textile book available in our library, please feel free to submit a review to post in the newsletter.
Weftover Sale!
The PHG closet is overflowing with fiber, so we’re having a weftover sale! It’ll be Saturday, October 22 in the MAC gymnasium. There will be lots of great fiber available at really, really, really good prices. If you’re free that day we could really use some help with setup, sales, teardown, and demos. We’ll have all the details for you in next month’s newsletter and on the website. In the meantime please contact our new treasurer Mike Schlieski if you can help with the sale.

The 2023 ANWG Conference is a GO for June 11-18, 2023 at the Riverhouse Convention Center and Hotel in Bend. Portland Handweavers Guild is weaving the name tags. Fall Sale News
Plans are firming up for the upcoming Fall Sale at MAC! Booth sizes are a little smaller this year because the gymnasium is much smaller than the auditorium and we’d like to accommodate as many members as possible. There are a limited number of 10×10 booths, most are 9×10, and there are three 6×10 spaces. Space is reserved on a first come/ first serve basis. You are welcome to share a space with a friend.
Application fees are slightly higher, but there is no commission this year! You still have the option of processing your own booth sales or using a central checkout.
Also new this year is a more relaxed set up on Friday evening, with the sale beginning on Saturday morning at 10am.
Remember that you must be a current member of PHG to participate in the sale.

The Oregon State Fair is back for 2022 and back to its full standard as opposed to last year’s cut-down version.
The fair will run August 26 through September 5 at the fairgrounds in Salem. Columbia Hall will be home to the textiles departments – Fiber Arts, Needlework and Clothing and Quilting.

The Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO) committee is delighted to announce that the traveling show will take place beginning in January of 2023. This show travels around the state of Oregon showcasing the fiber arts in our communities. The Title of the show is “Filaments.” A prospectus for submissions (deadline December 15, 2022) is available now and we hope to have a large response from participating guild members. The WeGO Traveling Show has been well received in the past, so now is the time to begin to plan your Filaments project.
