PHG Board Meeting 1-28-21

Agenda
Portland Handweavers Guild Board Meeting
7 PM, January 28, 2021
Online Zoom Meeting

  1. Call to Order – Meeting called to order 7:00pm
    1. Roll Call: Lynne Fitzsimmons, Chris Rossi, Sue Walsh, Lynette Peterson, Janis Johnson, Linda Edquist, Robin Korybski, Dan Steves, Sylvia Emard, Cooki Messmer, Sharon Carsten, Maggie Patterson
  2. Minutes approved (Lynne Fitzsimmons)
  3. Grants
    • The Guild received $500 from Ann Wittkowski, the niece of Dorothy Scott.  $500 was also sent last year; this appears to be an annual check.
    • The grant was for education
    • There was discussion on using these grants to make workshops less expensive.
    • Due to the way workshops are priced (both the historical and experimental new model) makes it problematic to factor in the grant.
    • The question was raised did we need more equipment for workshops; answer was no.
    • Perhaps the grant could be applied to a workshop open to the entire guild, for example Rigid Heddle Day at the MAC, which also served as outreach
    • Lynne moved to use the Tacoma workshop pricing methodology for workshops.
    • Many seconds
    • Approved
    • WEGO grant has not yet arrived.
    • We also budget every year for grants.
    • No one applies for the grants.
    • It was noted that the grant requirements may seem intimidating to some, as they require a contribution to the library and a presentation.
    • It was suggested that we publicize the grants and make them more approachable.
    • Linda will write up something about the grants, and they will be mentioned at the monthly meeting(s)
  4. Newsletter (Sylvia Emard and Dan Steves)
    • The newsletter is currently sent out using Mailchimp, which wants its own mailing list, which isn’t always in sync with our mailing list.
    • Proposal is to post the newsletter to our website, then email members directing them to read the post on the website.
    • Discussion on the newsletter being a member benefit, and those who belong to additional guilds might forward it on to their members.
    • It was also mentioned that we still have a few members who lack internet.  Dan prints out and delivers two copies of the newsletter.
    • The decision was that the newsletter be public.
    • Note that the ANWG newsletter is treated as a blog post; people can subscribe and receive it in an email, but it does require a subscription to the blog for that.
    • We will invite everyone to opt-in to our blog subscription; piece is already written for the newsletter.
  5. June Program (Linda Edquist)
    • Normally it is the Strawberry Social, but not this year.  Maybe an outdoor event?
    • Program idea might be the 2015 Mannequin Project.
    • Or Studio Tours (via Zoom or video)
    • Or a giant Show and Tell
    • We still have to do the annual business at the June meeting.
    • Janis will lead the mannequin project overview presentation
  6. WEGO Dues (Sue Walsh)
    • WEGO Dues are due in March, based on membership totals.  Either $78 or $89, depending if lifetime members are counted.
    • Totally a paper process.  The treasurer (Lynette) will provide Sue with the check once the amount is finalized.
    • Need to specify our meeting place on the form.  Decision: “Due to pandemic restrictions are meetings via Zoom, will resume at the MAC after COVID.”
  7. Outreach Flyer (Cooki Messmer and Maggie Patterson)
    • Look over they flyer they drafted and provide feedback
    • Feedback: where is the Legacy Project?
    • Feedback: list of weaving teachers? PHG members who teach?
      1. There should be some criteria for the teaching list.  Or a disclaimer.  Or a recommendation that they check out the teacher.
    • Where could we do outreach?
      1. Farmers’ Markets?
    • Use the Dorothy Scott grant to sponsor some free introductory weaving classes
    • Might spend some money on a graphic artist to create a trifold.
  8. GOTG (Janis Johnson)
    • Oregon Potters Association website folks are working on the GOTG website.  Invoices for the development work are being sent to the guilds.  There will also be money spent on advertising.
    • Cooki and Maggie (our outreach committee) should think about having people demonstrating weaving via Zoom during GOTG.
    • Janis offered up her front yard for weaving demonstrations.
  9. Mannequins (Chris Rossi)
    • The project is on the backburner for now; also Chris won’t be able to chair the committee.  No other volunteers as of yet.
  10. Next Year (All)
    • Who’s continuing
      • Outreach (Maggie and Cooki) Maggie – if Cooki does. Cooki – if Maggie does
      • Sue Walsh (coordinating external organizations) – not continuing; need to focus on the ANWG Conference.
        1. Complex Weavers – Ladella
        2. ANWG Rep – Dan – maybe someone else should do that, but will continue if needed
        3. WEGO – Sue – not continuing
        4. Website – Dan – will continue
        5. Membership – Dan – not continuing.  It is in a good place; the job is easier than it used to be
        6. Progams – Linda – would like to not continue
        7. Education Director – Linda – will continue
        8. Newsletter – Sylvia – will continue
        9. Treasurer – Lynette – will continue
        10. Library, Rentals and “Stuff” – Robin – will continue
        11. Sales – Janis – would like another person to be director of sales.  Continuing on the GOTG Board and GOTG Treasurer.  Could be ANWG or WEGO rep
        12. Workshop Chair – Lynne – continuing
        13. Secretary – Lynne – continuing
        14. President – Chris – not continuing
  11. Library, Rentals and “Stuff” (Robin)
    • Our existing budget covers buying new books
    • Want another reed for the Mountain Loom
    • Small equipment is going up on the website for checkout (equipment library)
  12. Miscellaneous
    • Sue heard through WEGO that some of the guilds who are attending our programs via Zoom are very appreciative.  Many are from Central Oregon.
