President’s Message
It has been my pleasure to help PHG weather the pandemic for the last year. It certainly has been a time of change. Some of the changes were positive and I hope we can build on them in the coming year. The Board is in place (pending member approval on June 10) with Sarah McCully-Posner as President, Lynette Peterson continuing as Treasurer, Lynne Fitzsimmons continuing as Secretary and Workshop chair. Dan Steves will be in charge of Programs and Jessica Bardsley will handle Membership. Maggie Patterson and Cooki Messmer will continue leading Outreach; Sylvia Emard will continue with the Newsletter and Ladella Williams will continue to be our Complex Weavers representative. Robin Korybski will continue as Library and Rentals chair and Janis Johnson will be Sales chair until her duties with ANWG call her away. Linda Edquist will finally be able to assume all her duties as Director of Education. I cannot express how helpful all the Board members have been to me, and how energetically and creatively they have supported PHG during these pandemic months.
I am also grateful to our members who have continued paying their membership dues not knowing what the future held and for adapting to Zoom with minimal grumbling. You are the best!

We will meet virtually to elect officers, vote on the budget, share projects and ideas for the future and visit with other members. The meeting will include a presentation about PHG’s 2015 Mannequin Project by several guild members and friends who were involved in that project. We’re starting to think about programs for the 2021-2022 program cycle. Have an idea for someone you’d like to see present a program for the guild? Please contact Dan Steves, who will be leading Programs for next year.
Workshops
Robyn Spady will present her Block Party Workshop December 11-12, 2021.
Description from Robyn’s website: Do the terms “block design” and “profile draft” bewilder you? Are you interested in developing new patterns and pushing your loom to new limits? Whether you have a four-shaft loom and want to expand its potential or want to better understand what to with all those shafts, then this workshop is for you! Through presentation, discussion, and weaving, you will develop a practical understanding of blocks, profile drafts, and how to use them to create new exciting drafts. You will also examine the fundamental building blocks of many weave structures and how they can be manipulated into new designs and open up an unlimited number of new possibilities. Minimum four-shaft loom required. (Note: This is not a round-robin workshop.)
Workshop price is not yet determined. Registration will open when all details have been confirmed.

Guild News
Membership – It’s that time of year already!
Beginning immediately we can accept membership renewals for the 2021-2022 fiscal year that starts July 1, 2021. And just a reminder – your membership runs from July 1 to June 30. All memberships are up for renewal on July 1. The only exception is new members who joined after March 1 of this year. The new year (fiscal year, that is) for PHG will bring with it a new Membership Director. Jessica Bardsley has offered to take on the role for the coming year. She’s already learning the new membership system, and helping ensure that we have a complete membership directory for the year. For now you can continue to send membership queries to Dan, but starting July 1 you’ll want to reach out to Jessica with questions.

Do you like the PHG website? Or do you really dislike it? Or maybe you just have some free time and want to help out. Dan Steves is looking for help with the PHG website. No experience necessary. Library Days in July and August, 2021
Librarian Robin Korybski plans to continue with PHG Library days this summer on the third Thursday of July and August, 2021. 10-10:30 am at the MAC back patio.
Volunteer Sign-Up Reminder
Remember that Maggie Patterson and Cooki Messmer are planning some PHG outreach activities starting this spring, and going into the summer and fall. They are planning some demonstrations at farmers markets, yarn shops, and other locations to reach out especially to non-weavers who may be interested in learning to weave. They will have a handout with resource information for our guild, where to buy weaving equipment and supplies, how to find lessons, etc. Maggie and Cooki will do some of the demonstrations themselves but are also hoping to generate a list of other guild members willing to volunteer.
If you are willing to be on that volunteer call list please email Maggie at mudgepatterson@hotmail.com giving her your email and phone number. They have a table, a canopy, yarn and 2 small looms, including a rigid heddle loom, so you don’t need to bring anything unless you want to. Being cautious about COVID-19 concerns, all volunteers will wear masks and we will not allow folks who stop by to chat to actually try out the looms, but only watch the demos and get their questions answered.
If you have any questions, please contact Maggie. At this point they are just creating a list of folks who may be available. As dates arise you may get called. You can say no if the date doesn’t work for you.

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023
The 2023 Conference Committee has been proactively looking at a wide-range of venues. This has been quite a challenge as they must take into consideration everything from the location, size and availability of the venue, as well as the specific needs of the conference. At this time, they are continuing efforts to narrow down the most suitable choices and have not yet determined an exact date or location.
So for now, please continue to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors. The committee will keep you updated on progress toward the 2023 conference in periodic blog posts and on the website as they work on securing a date and location for the summer 2023 ANWG conference.

Handweavers Guild of America
Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) is our national weaving organization whose mission is to educate, support and inspire the fiber arts community. Many of us think of Convergence, the biennial international conference, when we think of HGA. The next Convergence will be in Knoxville, Tennessee July 15-21, 2022. (Please check the link for updates on the conference schedule during this uncertain time).
Membership also entitles you to receive the quarterly Shuttle Spindle and Dyepot magazine, guided study opportunities, grants to study or take workshops, fiber resources such as textile kits and multimedia rentals, travel excursions and eligibility for Small Expressions exhibit and the HGA Award given to more than 30 deserving artists each year.

Kathy’s Show
Most of you know that long-time PHG member Kathy Sengenberger passed away at the end of December after a long illness. Her husband, Dave, has asked us to help him with a sale of Kathy’s weaving yarns and tools. Half of the proceeds will go to the Portland Handweavers Guild and half to other organizations that Kathy supported.
There is A LOT of weaving yarn, weaving tools, Kathy’s loom, a sewing machine, fabric and thread, a serger and more. The sale will be held for PHG members only, in the garage at the Sengenberger’s home, 25 Hillshire Drive, Lake Oswego 97034 on June 11 and 12 from 10-3 each day. Dave is very upbeat and wants the two days to both benefit the guild and provide a chance to remember Kathy.
Please mark your calendars and get out your checkbooks! Plan on laughing a lot, and maybe crying a little, at this event which Dave has dubbed “Kathy’s Show”.
Spool Rack for Sale
Leanne Streit has a spool rack for sale @ $195: holds 48 spools (more than most spool racks). You can either pick up (near Skyline Dinner) or she can meet you somewhere in the Portland Metro area. Also open to meeting part way to areas like Salem or Vancouver area.

The Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO) committee is delighted to announce that the traveling show will take place beginning in January of 2023. This show travels around the state of Oregon showcasing the fiber arts in our communities. The Title of the show is “Filaments.” A prospectus for submissions will be coming out soon and we hope to have a large response from participating guild members. The WeGO Traveling Show has been well received in the past, so now is the time to begin to plan your Filaments project.

The Three Rivers Artist Guild is approved to hold the annual Oregon City Festival of the Arts on August 14, 15 this year. This is a 2-day Festival with 55 Artists’ booths, all day entertainment, a silent auction, children’s craft corner and food vendors. The festival attracts approximately 2500 people over the weekend. It is an outdoor Festival and held at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center located at 1726 Washington Street in Oregon City. Artists who apply will be juried for selection into the Festival due to limited space available.
