Extra Meeting in June!

Ann Morton – Violet Protest

We’ve scheduled an extra meeting on June 10 at 10:00 am PST for a presentation from Ann Morton on the Violet Protest project. Given the deadline for submission for the project we felt that this was the best option to give members a chance to learn more and still participate if you’re interested. This will be in addition to the regular annual meeting for approval of the budget, election of officers, and a program on the mannequin project.
Hope to see you all next week.

Ann Morton is the genius behind the Violet Protest, a public project which invites people to create 8” textile squares, to be equally divided and sent to each member of Congress next fall. The creator uses the textile medium of his/her choice – sewing, weaving, knitting, felting, quilting, etc – using half red and half blue colors (blue+red=violet).

Creators have until August 1 to send their squares to Ann, where they are being added to a remarkable display at the Phoenix Art Museum until Sept 1. From there, the squares will be equally divided and sent to each member of Congress, with the clear but non-partisan message to work positively together.

Ann is a wonderful artist herself, who has become well known for her large “message” installations. One such installation was her “Ground Cover” project: Hundreds of volunteers knit, wove and quilted blankets, which when laid side by side, filled an entire parking lot; and when viewed from above, created the images of desert flowers. The blankets were later distributed to the homeless.

She has included several links below, explaining more about the Violet Protest.
