President’s Message
I miss traveling. I used to go to New York City a few times a year to visit my daughter, and in the past I’ve gone to other countries and parts of the United States. There was inspiration in every trip no matter where I went. I particularly remember a trip to Arizona. I brought back images and colors in my head that I used for years.
So, I’ve been scouring the internet and have found that museums are coming to the rescue by putting some or all of their collections online. My very favorite is the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The V&A has a huge collection of textiles, and they have created an online collection that is extraordinary. You’ll find them at https://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/textiles.
The Textile Museum in Washington D.C., now moved to George Washington University, has a fabulous collection. Originally they primarily had “Oriental” rugs, but they have expanded their collection to include textiles from Africa and Asia and contemporary art textiles. Many of these are online, and their goal is to get them all online by 2025. Find them at https://museum.gwu.edu.
I urge you to visit both these museums and let their collections enthrall you and provide new inspiration for your work. See you there!

L’Amour de Maman – Acadian Weaving
The earliest European settlers arrived in Maritime Canada beginning in 1632 and were known as Acadians. Caught in the political conflict between France and England, the Acadians were forcibly removed from their homeland in 1755 and many spent ten long years imprisoned or homeless before eventually settling in Louisiana where they became known as Cajuns. 250 years later, Cajun weavers were following the same weaving traditions as their Acadian foremothers. Come and hear about this remarkable story and see the beautiful fabrics they created on their two harness looms!

Card Trick: The “Magic” of Tablet Weaving
This lecture/demonstration class offers a window onto one of the best-kept secrets of the weaving world – that you can weave with nothing but threads and a deck of cards! Originating in the Iron Age, this technique is enjoying a surge in popularity lately as it is re-discovered by weavers today. We will discuss the theory, the history, and many of the weaving techniques themselves, and view examples sure to awe and inspire.

Double Rainbow Doubleweave
Taught by Jennifer Moore
Dates: April 7, 9, 12, and 14 (Wed, Fri, Mon, Wed), Zoom sessions from 10am-2pm.
Description: from Jennifer’s website: “This is perhaps the ultimate color sampler! You will begin by winding a warp and setting up your loom according to Jennifer’s system for working with multiple colors in a rotational sequence and bringing it to the workshop. A basic two-layered structure will enable you to mix and match your colors, creating an amazing array of color mixtures. As you weave and your warp colors move past each other you will experience a visual feast of iridescence and moire patterns. We will also experiment with single-layered structures such as warp rep and warp-faced twills and the effects that they create on this versatile warp. Those set up for two blocks on eight shafts will also be able explore an unlimited range of block combinations.”
This workshop is intended for weavers who can wind a warp and dress their loom. No prior doubleweave experience required. Jennifer will be sending participants the setup information after March 1.
Materials: 4 or 8 shaft loom. Yarn in 6 colors (amounts and possibly colors to be specified later). Shuttles, bobbin winders, all that stuff you need to weave…
Maximum of 20 participants. Presentations will be recorded and will be available to registered participants for up to 2 weeks after the conclusion of the workshop.

Happy Endings – Finishing Techniques for Woven Fabric
Taught by Deborah Jarchow
Date: Saturday May 15, 2021, two sessions, 9-11am and 2-4pm.
Description: from Deborah: “Do you wonder what more there is to do with the ends of your woven cloth besides fringe? Do you wish for different look on the ends of your scarves? In this workshop you will learn several techniques that can give you alternatives for the ends. Learn how to plan for hemming and about twisting, braiding, adding beads, decorative knotting, and knitting and crochet to the edges as well as some fancy techniques. These alternatives will enhance your weaving skills and give you more options.”
Homework: Warp your rigid heddle or shaft loom 4” wide, set up for plain weave, 60” long with worsted weight yarn, sett at 7.5 or 8 ends per inch.
Materials: Warped loom. About 50 – 75 yards of yarn to use for weft. Sewing needle, tapestry needle, scissors, D or E crochet hook, sized 5 or 6 knitting needle, straight pins, 25 – 30- beads to fit on yarn, dental floss threader (available at most drug stores by dental hygiene products), fusible thread, 30 yards waste yarn (worsted weight acrylic works well), post it notes, shuttle/bobbins.
Maximum of 20 participants.
Twining, Looping, Soumak, Rya, and Inlay Sampler on the Rigid Heddle (or Shaft) Loom (Tapestry Techniques)
Taught by Deborah Jarchow
Date: Sunday, May 16, 2021, two sessions 11am-1pm and 3-5pm (allows time to reset your loom if you took the first workshop)
Description from Deborah: “Learn these wonderful advanced techniques that can take your weaving to the next level. Spend some time making a sampler that includes simple hemstitch, twining, looping, soumak and inlay, which can add textural interest to your weaving projects. During the class you will learn the techniques and then be encouraged to try different yarns and variations to broaden your understanding of these skills. Use these variations to create your own style and increase the artistry of your woven pieces.”
Homework: Warp your loom with the dk or light worsted weight yarn using a 7.5 or 8 dent reed. the warp should be 88” long and consist of 64 warp threads (32 slots, 32 holes). Spread the warp with waste yarn to even out all warp threads.
Materials: 300 yards dk or light worsted weight yarn for the warp and some weft. This yarn should be strong, non-hairy, solid color, non-stretchy. 200 yards of a different solid color worsted weight yarn for weft. 100 yards each of two different bulky weight yarns. These can be multi-colored or variegated as you can see in the project image. 10 – 15 yards waste yarn (acrylic worsted weight works well), scissors, tapestry needle, measuring tape, 2 brown paper grocery bags, 2 – 3 tubes from inside a paper towel roll, a hair pick or wide tooth comb plus a fork (non-plastic), long (13”-14” straight knitting needles in around sizes 7 – 9 and 13 (these can be shared with a friend), crochet hook size E – G or so (this is helpful but not mandatory), pick up stick 8” wide minimum – or the size of your loom, 2 shuttles (I used 1 boat and 1 stick).
Maximum of 20 participants.

PHG Newsletter Changes Coming March, 2021
Beginning March, 2021, the PHG monthly newsletter will become a blog post on the website. We will ask members and non-members alike to “subscribe” to the newsletter, meaning they will get an email notification when a new blog post is available for viewing. To subscribe, please enter your email address in the newsletter signup on the home page. You will get an email with a link to confirm. You must click the link or you won’t be subscribed. The newsletter link and signup form will be easy to find in the sidebar on the left side of the page.
If you choose not to subscribe, you will not get an email notification, but the newsletter will be publicly available to view on the PHG website on, or a few days before, the first of each month from September through June. Newsletters will be posted in the summer months of July and August if there is news of importance to our members.
This change is prompted by the difficulty of maintaining accurate, duplicate member/mailing lists on both the website and Mailchimp accounts. We would like to direct the email notifications to the single official PHG member list which is stored on the website. We hope this change will allow everyone who wants an email notification to opt in for those reminders, while the actual newsletter content will be available at all times to all visitors to the website.

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023
On August 29, 2020, the 2021 ANWG Conference Steering Committee met via Zoom video conference to discuss the future of the conference. As comments and ideas were put forward, a key issue of concern was the impact of COVID-19 and if we would be able to move forward with the event. After careful consideration, the committee unanimously approved the recommendation to move the conference to the summer of 2023. This decision was made after considering a number of issues regarding the pandemic, mandates for public gatherings, and nationwide health concerns. On September 10 and 11 the ANWG and WeGO boards voted unanimously to concur with the rescheduling recommendation.
For those who are unaware, the 2021 ANWG Conference venue, Willamette University (WU), has been closed to the public since March and conference organizers have been unable to visit the campus. As a result, WU is unable to provide organizers with any certainty about when or if the campus will reopen to visitors or whether the conference in June 2021 would be permitted. These factors and other health risks led to the decision to reschedule the conference to the summer of 2023.
Over the next few weeks the committee will be in close contact with Willamette University to determine if they have availability in their summer 2023 calendar for the conference. Communications will be sent to all parties involved as soon as a new date and possibly a new venue are determined.
We are saddened to reschedule the conference but feel this is the prudent course of action for the ANWG membership and conference guests. Now you have more time to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors! We will keep you updated with our progress toward 2023 in periodic blog posts and on the website. So stay tuned, we’ll be working on moving everything forward and hope you will join us.

Handweavers Guild of America
Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) is our national weaving organization whose mission is to educate, support and inspire the fiber arts community. Many of us think of Convergence, the biennial international conference, when we think of HGA. The next Convergence will be in Knoxville, Tennessee July 15-21, 2022. (Please check the link for updates on the conference schedule during this uncertain time).
Membership also entitles you to receive the quarterly Shuttle Spindle and Dyepot magazine, guided study opportunities, grants to study or take workshops, fiber resources such as textile kits and multimedia rentals, travel excursions and eligibility for Small Expressions exhibit and the HGA Award given to more than 30 deserving artists each year.

Virtual Gathering of the Guilds 2021

The Gathering of the Guilds is a Go! It’s just a different kind of “go” this year. We’re getting closer to normal but we’re not there quite yet. So, rather than lose our momentum and, perhaps, disappoint our artistically oriented fans, we’re going to go online.
This means lots of changes in how we’ll operate as well as opportunities for all of us to do things differently to promote our fiber art.
It’s early yet and many – well, actually ALL! – details are still being worked out. For now, here is what we know:
The dates: April 30 through May 2, 2021 for the big opening weekend, and the website will stay up for a to-be-determined number of months afterwards.
Fees: A nominal amount to cover advertising.
How will I sell: In any of a variety of ways including but certainly not limited to:
- An online store of your own with links to your website, Facebook page or Etsy shop from your page on the Gathering of the Guilds website;
- Open Studio (if well-ventilated) with set hours;
- Personal deliveries to customers who call or email you;
- Meet ups in parking lots!
So, wind up your creative engines, start building your inventory, and stay tuned. Details will be shared as they develop. People are eager to get back to things as they are and this is a great opportunity to help them and us along.

HGA’s Textiles & Tea Online Conversation

The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc.’s (HGA) exciting new program for 2021, Textiles & Tea takes place every Tuesday at 4 PM (EST). We’ve invited some of the most respected fiber artists in the field to join us for an hour long conversation where we discuss their artwork and creative journey. Make a cup of your favorite tea and join us as we talk about fiber, creativity, inspiration, process and so much more.
Textiles & Tea espiodes are broadcast via Zoom to the first 500 registrants to sign into the app. Overflow simultaneous live viewing is available on HGA’s Facebook page (a link will be provided in the registration confirmation email). The Handweavers Guild of America is Accepting Entries for the Small Expressions 2021 Traveling Exhibit

Small Expressions is an annual, international, juried exhibit sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. (HGA) to showcase contemporary small scale works created using fiber techniques in any media, not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction including mounting, framing, or display devices. Juried by Madelyn van der Hoogt, the exhibit will open at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum (June 30 – August 22, 2021) in La Conner, Washington. The exhibit will then tour the United States for a year. Download Prospectus.
