President’s Message

Back when we were still having monthly meetings in the MAC auditorium, I really disliked Show and Tell. I couldn’t see what the person was holding up, I couldn’t hear what they were saying and it was so dismal in that cavernous room. Now that we are having Show and Tell as a part of the monthly Zoom meeting, I really like it.

Members send Linda Edquist pictures of their work, usually taken with their phone, and Linda puts them in a Powerpoint presentation. The pictures are detailed and clear and you can actually hear what the member is saying. Most of the pieces, of course, have a story. Last month Judy Daggett Head showed and talked about the last tapestry she wove 29 years ago which was in a sad period in her life and was mostly dark colors. Then she showed her first tapestry since then, a colorful and lively tapestry inspired by art work of her grandson. Stephanie Anderson showed her North Coast Chief’s Robe, finally finished. She discussed the symbology and techniques, interwoven with snippets of her family history in Alaska. There were others, of course, but space does not allow me to mention them.

I got to watch all this in the comfort of my own home, and I didn’t have to drive in the dark and rain to MAC! Please grab a cup of tea, find a comfy chair, and join us for the January 14 Zoom meeting, with a program by Robyn Spady and a wonderful Show and Tell by our own members. I look forward to seeing you there!

Chris Rossi, PHG President

Robyn Spady

Great Weave Structures for Color and
Texture using Novelty Yarns

Perhaps you have walked into a yarn shop and been fascinated with stunning novelty yarns. But as a weaver, it can be a challenge to figure out how to incorporate them into weaving projects in order to showcase the yarns without breaking the bank. Or you may have been inspired by the fabric used for a Chanel-style jacket that was created by Linton Tweed, Lesage, or Bernat Klein and would like to see how these fabrics were created so you can design and weave your own. In this program, Robyn Spady will share a small collection of weave structures that let you take advantage of fun and exciting yarns and add new dimensions to your weaving.

Workshops

Detailed information will be posted on the PHG website as it becomes available so check there often. Click here for more info.

NOTICE: All Workshops are on hold. We are working on scheduling online possiblities. Please stay tuned.

We will attempt to reschedule the planned workshops when it is safe for us to gather again in person. In the interim, the possibility of remote/online workshops is being explored, but it isn’t looking all that promising at the moment.

As always, feel free to ask any questions!

GUILD NEWS

Community Outreach

A Message from Cooki Messmer and Maggie Patterson
Maggie Patterson and I agreed to be the Community Outreach Co-Directors this year.  We hoped to increase the Guild’s efforts to introduce folks to weaving, encourage people who have an interest in weaving to pursue it, and make them aware of our Guild as a resource. But then the pandemic struck and it became difficult to reach out to the public. But we did brainstorm some great ideas and asked the Guild to buy us a couple of small rigid heddle looms for our efforts.

Here are some ideas we came up with and are hoping to follow through on once we can all get out into the public safely. When that happens we’ll be asking for volunteers to help out.

  1. Set up a table at some of the local farmers markets with a couple of small looms for demonstrations and have the Guild flyer available. We have all experienced how folks often stop by at Guild sale demos to chat or try out a loom. Hopefully they will do the same in a farmers’ market setting.
  2. Contact local art teachers from the public schools and offer to do a demo in a class with the hope that when they see that there are small, inexpensive looms available they may be motivated to get a couple for their classrooms and continue to introduce weaving to their students.
  3. Set up a booth at the Art Teachers Professional Organization state conference to demonstrate weaving to the teachers and answer their questions on resources and support for weaving in the classroom.
  4. Develop a Portland area resource list for weaving lessons, workshops, and support that we can hand out at public events and distribute to yarn shops, titled “So You’d Like to Learn How to Weave”.

If you have any other ideas for outreach, please let us know. And we’re hoping many of you will be willing to help us with these efforts when the time is right.

Cooki Messmer

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023

On August 29, 2020, the 2021 ANWG Conference Steering Committee met via Zoom video conference to discuss the future of the conference. As comments and ideas were put forward, a key issue of concern was the impact of COVID-19 and if we would be able to move forward with the event.  After careful consideration, the committee unanimously approved the recommendation to move the conference to the summer of 2023. This decision was made after considering a number of issues regarding the pandemic, mandates for public gatherings, and nationwide health concerns.  On September 10 and 11 the ANWG and WeGO boards voted unanimously to concur with the rescheduling recommendation.

For those who are unaware, the 2021 ANWG Conference venue, Willamette University (WU), has been closed to the public since March and conference organizers have been unable to visit the campus. As a result, WU is unable to provide organizers with any certainty about when or if the campus will reopen to visitors or whether the conference in June 2021 would be permitted. These factors and other health risks led to the decision to reschedule the conference to the summer of 2023.

Over the next few weeks the committee will be in close contact with Willamette University to determine if they have availability in their summer 2023 calendar for the conference. Communications will be sent to all parties involved as soon as a new date and possibly a new venue are determined.

We are saddened to reschedule the conference but feel this is the prudent course of action for the ANWG membership and conference guests.  Now you have more time to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors!  We will keep you updated with our progress toward 2023 in periodic blog posts and on the website.  So stay tuned, we’ll be working on moving everything forward and hope you will join us.

Sale News

Virtual Gathering of the Guilds 2021

April 30-May 2, 2021
A virtual 2021 Gathering of the Guilds is in the works. It will take place April 30-May 2, 2021 and, depending on the amount of volunteer help and enthusiasm, might feature special live events online or even small in-person socially-distant events around town. The website will remain online for at least a couple of months after that.

As in the past, each guild will plan its own portion of the sale and determine who can participate and how to cover its share of the costs. For the 2021 virtual show, Portland Handweavers Guild will have an application process similar to what it used the last few years. Show publicity will be via social media and word of mouth rather than the extensive advertising done in the past, so costs will be fairly low. PHG will cover participation costs for its members in the show.

Planning is progressing slowly, but information for applicants should be available by mid-January. Contact PHG Director of Sales Janis Johnson janis.marie.johnson@gmail.comwith questions.

Online Workshop Opportunity

Sprang Workshop 2021 by Carol James. This one is via the Braids and Bands group on groups.io, so you’d have to join that group and then sign up. This workshop is free. The format is posted documents that you follow along with. It starts January 4, but, again, you don’t have to start on that date; the files will be up forever. Lynne Fitzsimmons took a workshop from Susan Foulkes on band weaving though this group, and it was well done. Lots of conversation in the group from those participating.
