President’s Message
Greetings, all! Hope everyone is staying cool during this heat wave. Luckily we have a/c so it hasn’t been too bad for us. And with trips to San Francisco, Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia on the calendar we hope to avoid the heat as much as possible.
Thanks to Sylvia Emard and our new newsletter person Tim Prins for putting out a mid-summer newsletter. We don’t usually do much in the summer but there’s a couple things coming up that I wanted to make sure folks knew about so they offered to put out this mid-summer edition.
Before I get into the fun stuff, we’re still looking for a couple people to help out on the board. We are in desperate need of a sales director and a program chair. I’m acting as sales director for now, and Linda Edquist has stepped up to help with programs, but we really need people to take these on. The new program year is starting soon, and the folks at Gathering of the Guilds have already started talking and planning for next year’s show. If you need more information or would like to volunteer to help with either of these roles please let me know.
For the fun stuff that’s coming up soon, Maryhill Museum in Goldendale, WA has curated “The Exquisite Gorge Project II: Fiber Arts” this summer. The project features 13 regional fiber artists including PHG member Francisco Bautista with installations along 220 miles of the Columbia River from the Willamette Confluence to the Snake River Confluence. There’s a culminating Festival of Fiber Arts being held at the museum on Saturday, August 6 where each of the free-standing sections will be brought together. It sounds like a great event, so if you have time you might want to check it out. Details are available at https://www.maryhillmuseum.org/exquisite-gorge-project-2022. I understand from Linda Edquist that you can get a decent lunch there, too, and maybe check out a winery or two on your way home if you want to make a day of it.
The Oregon State fair is also just around the corner. This year there will be a return to the usual competitions, including one in fiber arts. If you’re interested in entering the details are on the fair website at https://oregonstatefair.org/competitions/creative-living/textiles/. Look for the Fiber Arts Handbook. But hurry – the deadline for entries is August 17.
And soon it’ll be time for Art in the Pearl. As Cooki and Sarah share below we’ll be demonstrating. If you’d like to help there’s a link where you can sign up to come and demonstrate with the guild. I was there helping out with the last Art in the Pearl and had a great time. If you can come for a few hours and share your craft with the public it helps get people interested in what we do, and even brings in a new member or two. Plus you are surrounded by some very talented artists. What a great way to spend a day.
Lastly, planning for the next ANWG conference in Bend next year is starting to move into high gear, and the hotel blocks set aside for the conference will be opening up soon. If you plan to join us in Bend next summer then keep an eye on the conference website at https://anwgconference2023.com, or better yet sign up for the conference blog (it’s like a newsletter, but with a more internety name). You can find the blog at https://anwgconference2023.com/blog/ and while you’re there you can sign up to subscribe and get the new blog posts in your email inbox as they come out.

Beginning Rigid Heddle Weaving taught by Patty Huffer, September 10-11, 2022, at Ruthie’s Weaving Studio at 3131 SE 50th and SE Kelley. This is being underwritten by WeGo, and has a maximum of 6 participants.

Demonstrators Needed!!!
There are lots more opportunities to volunteer to demonstrate in August and September! Please come and give a few hours to help spread the word about weaving and resources offered by our Guild!! We get lots of interest from the public when they see our members weaving on a variety of looms. Some show interest in our upcoming sales events and some want information on how to get started weaving. We always have a variety of small looms there for you to work on or show others how to do it. Or you can bring your own small loom and project along! It’s a fun way to get to know some other members in the Guild a little better.

Fall Sale News
PHG Fall Fiber Arts Sale
Even though it has been waaay too hot this summer already, it’s time to start thinking about cooler weather and the upcoming fall sale! Since we missed the last two years, I’m sure you all have lots of inventory to part with…. This year we will be at MAC, but in the gym instead of the main auditorium; the gym is smaller than the auditorium, but the lighting is better.. Our sale will be Veteran’s Day weekend with a few changes from previous years. Most of the responses to the recent survey voted for a set up on Friday, with the sale commencing on Saturday morning. We will also have a flat booth fee without the normal guild commission. Details and applications will be available by the end of August as we figure out the new layout/booth size and fee structure. Oregon State Fair

The Oregon State Fair is back for 2022 and back to its full standard as opposed to last year’s cut-down version.
The fair will run August 26 through September 5 at the fairgrounds in Salem. Columbia Hall will be home to the textiles departments – Fiber Arts, Needlework and Clothing and Quilting.

The Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO) committee is delighted to announce that the traveling show will take place beginning in January of 2023. This show travels around the state of Oregon showcasing the fiber arts in our communities. The Title of the show is “Filaments.” A prospectus for submissions (deadline December 15, 2022) is available now and we hope to have a large response from participating guild members. The WeGO Traveling Show has been well received in the past, so now is the time to begin to plan your Filaments project.
