Ruth Dabritz Legacy Weaving Project Assistants

The Ruth Dabritz Legacy Weaving Project is looking for assistants for upcoming classes. The Introduction to Weaving class covers all aspects of the basic floor loom weaving process. Students plan a project, make a warp, dress the loom and then, of course, throw the shuttle. They also learn how to correct common weaving errors, and afterwards they learn about finishing techniques to complete their projects at home. Throughout the class, they are developing basic weaving skills and a weaving vocabulary. Classes are limited to 6 students.

For each class there’s a lead instructor and several assistants. Because most of the students have never woven before we want to make sure they have access to assistants to answer questions and keep them moving forward. Assistants assist students with all the normal weaving tasks:

Day 1: Planning their project, measuring their warp, sleying the reed, and threading the heddles.
Day 2: Continue with threading the heddles, tie and wind onto the warp beam, tie onto the cloth beam, check for errors, tie-up the treadles and begin weaving.
Day 3: Finish weaving, cut off their projects and discuss finishing and next steps.

To ensure access to assistants we need 5 assistants on Day 1, 4 assistants on day 2, and 2 assistants on day 3. If you’d like to volunteer your time to help with a class we’d love to have you join us. Assistants are expected to be familiar with the entire weaving process, be able to assist with front to back warping, and help fix problems as they come up. If you have questions you can email the Legacy Chair or the Legacy Registrar for information.
