President’s Message
Fall is here, and with it hopefully more time indoors working on one of the unfinished projects on the looms. Yes, there’s more than one. There’s a krokbragd project on the knitters loom that is going to be a couple bags. There’s the scarf in tencel on another rigid heddle loom. And the 8 shaft table loom is waiting for a conversion from the old noisy Dorothy levers on the side to new lifting levers on top using texsolve. Should be much quieter. Then there’s the pin loom squares that are stacked and waiting to be assembled into a throw. Certainly no lack of projects to keep me busy.
October is going to be a big month for us. First is our normal meeting with a program by John Beard talking about his experience learning Ravenstail weaving. This event will mark our first official participation in Portland Textile Month! You can see our listing on their website at https://www.textilex.org/event/the-evolution-of-ravenstail-weaving/. Then we have the weftover sale on the 21st. Time to clear out those cones of yarn that thought you might use some day but never did. Or, maybe fill in that hole in your stash with a budget friendly cone or two from the table. And, right after the weftover sale we’ll have our first new member tea since 2020. Another sign that things are returning to a pre-Covid state. I hope you’ll come join us for one of these events this month.
Lots going on, and more to come. Now, off to clear some things out of my stash for the weftover sale, and maybe make room for something else I can’t resist. Hope you all have a great month, and as always I hope to see you at a meeting soon.

Upcoming Programs
October 12th: The Evolution of Ravenstail Weaving
In July 1994, just a month after retiring, John took his first class in Ravenstail weaving from Cheryl Samuel. Additional classes honed his weaving skills, and in 1996 he guided a group of Cheryl’s Portland area students in the weaving of a full size Ravenstail robe. After its completion in 1998, and building on that additional experience, he continued to weave, completing a full size robe, a youth robe, two small child’s robes, an apron, and several smaller pieces over the next eight years. A special highlight of his exhilarating weaving journey has been the opportunity to see the robes worn and danced by Native Americans at Celebration 2000, 2002, and 2006 in Juneau. Sharing the story of Ravenstail weaving through teaching, demonstrations and presentations continues to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of his life.
November 9th: Woven Color Theory – Ahnika Wood
There are many ways to approach color choices while designing and weaving woven structures. In this presentation, local artist Ahnika Wood will present underlying color theory specifically tailored to weaving. We will discuss phenomena such as color relativity and optical mixing, and how these can present both challenges and exciting opportunities for visual effects. How do you approach color while weaving? The goal of this presentation is to assist you in realizing your own distinct approach and consider other possibilities for play when making woven color decisions.
Annual Weftover Sale
Saturday, October 21, 10 AM – 2 PM in Room 30 at the Multnomah Arts Center
We have lots of yarns, in skeins and on cones, books, DVDs and more, and it’s taking up way too much room! Help us clear out the closet and get a great deal on some fabulous fibers and other goodies. Sale starts at 10 AM. Come find something fun for your next fiber project. Please tell all your friends and come pick up a bargain or two. Proceeds benefit the Portland Handweavers Guild.
We’re also looking for donations for the sale. If you have items that you want to contribute you can bring them to the October meeting, or contact Sarah McCullly-Posner (sarah_mccully@yahoo.com), Dan Steves (dansteves@gmail.com), or Kay Inglin (in Vancouver, text 607-351-1595 or email Kay.inglin1986@gmail.com) to make arrangement to drop off items.

Planning for the fall sale is well underway! All the booths have been sold. Contact Judilee (judilee.fitzhugh@gmail.com) if you want to be added to the waiting list. The lineup is looking very exciting! We have some new vendors and some old favorites and there is a good mix of items…something for everyone on your holiday gift list!! We’re still looking for one or two folks to help with publicity, so if you’re contemplating that or have suggestions for advertising, please let us know. The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc.’s (HGA) exciting new program, Textiles & Tea, takes place every Tuesday at 4 PM (ET). We’ve invited some of the most respected fiber artists in the field today to join us for an hour long conversation where we will discuss their artwork and their creative journey. Make a cup of your favorite tea and join us as we talk about fiber, creativity, inspiration, process and so much more.
The Weaving Guilds of Oregon (WeGO) committee is delighted to announce that the traveling show will take place beginning in January of 2023. This show travels around the state of Oregon showcasing the fiber arts in our communities. The Title of the show is “Filaments.”
Threads | Þræðir Intertwined in Iceland: Textiles and Book Arts
July 8 – November 5, 2023

This exhibition showcases artists’ books and textile pieces by Icelandic artists and visiting artists who have been inspired by the country’s landscapes, people, language and textile traditions. The works in this exhibition are connected through stitching, weaving, knotting, tying, binding, pattern and storyline. The artists have found parallel lives in each other, unintentionally approaching art and life in similar fashions across oceans and between generations.
