President’s Message

Fall is here it seems.  We’re off to Carmel for Poodle Day which is sorta how I measure it. (Imagine 500 poodles wandering around Carmel – what a sight!) I’m hoping the cooler, wetter weather will give me more time indoors to weave.

Last month’s survey results weren’t really a surprise. Most folks learn about the guild either from friends or from the internet.

This month I’m wondering how many looms people have.  Is it just me or do looms breed like rabbits? I remember getting the first loom, and the last loom, but where did all those looms in between come from?  Take this month’s survey here: https://forms.gle/iJtaXcJxCXnfRTaE8

October is Portland Textile Month.  Lots of fiber events happening around town.  Check out the schedule at https://www.textilex.org.  For our part, PHG will be having our usual programs on Thursday, October 13. This month’s program is a presentation by Natalie Drummond entitled “My Fiber Journey with Color and Deflected Doubleweave.” It should be a great program.  Then, on Saturday, October 22 we’ll be having a special Weftover Sale in the gym at MAC.  I know, we usually have the weftover sale during the regular fall sale, but we have a lot to sell and it seemed like a good idea to do this during textile month and try to leverage the interest in fiber in the area.  We’re hoping to have demonstrations going throughout the day in addition to the great deals on fiber.  If you’d like to help with the sale contact Mike, and to help with the demos see the news further down in the newsletter from the Outreach team, or go to Signup Genius to sign up for a shift: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0948ACA929A1F85-weft. And please share the word about the sale with all your friends and neighbors.  We’re really hoping to sell as much fiber as possible to make a little room in the closet.

As always, I hope to see you all at a meeting soon.

Dan

Programs

October Program – Day and Evening Meetings In-Person at MAC Gymnasium and on Zoom

October 13, 2022
Natalie Drummond
My Fiber Journey with Color and Deflected Doubleweave

A PowerPoint presentation that outlines my journey and process for mixing fibers and colors with Deflected Doubleweave 4 to 8 shaft drafts. How does one determine sett? And what about those wonky Selvedges? Finishing (washing/fulling) of samples and finished projects are also a part of the presentation.

A note about this month’s program: Natalie will be joining us via Zoom for the morning meeting. Her presentation for the evening meeting will be a playback of the recording from the morning session.

November Program – Day and Evening Meetings In-Person at MAC Gymnasium and on Zoom

Margaret Bergman: Weaving Teacher, Designer, and Innovator

Margaret Bergman was a Swedish-American weaver who lived in Poulsbo, WA and had a significant impact on handweaving as we know it today in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. She patented her innovative folding loom, taught hundreds of students, was a prolific designer, and shared her knowledge freely. Her designs were the subject of the 2022 ANWG History Study Group. Bergman’s contributions and the projects of that study group are the subject of this presentation.

Guild News

Volunteer Opportunities!

We have 2 awesome opportunities coming up and we will need a few volunteers to help us make them successful!

First, we have our upcoming PHG Weft Over Sale on 22 October 2022 in the Multnomah Arts Center Gym. Along with selling off as much of the yarn in the closet as we can, we wanted to provide a demonstration area and answer questions about the Guild for people who come to the sale who might not know about us. We have mentioned we are doing all of this to the Portland Textile Month people and are hoping fiber people will learn about us through that and come to the sale. Here is the link to volunteer if you are willing:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0948ACA929A1F85-weft

If you have any questions about this, please contact Sarah McCully-Posner.

Secondly, we have been asked by the Washington State Art Educators to demonstrate at their Fall Conference, Saturday 5 November in Vancouver, WA. This will be a great opportunity to reach out to art teachers who hopefully will be open to ideas for incorporating instruction into weaving into their classes. It’s a great chance to create lots of new young weavers! We will post a sign up genius in the google groups soon, but please mark your calendars! Contact Cooki at cookimessmer@comcast.net if you have questions.

SAVE THE DATE!

This year has gotten off to a busy start and we have just set a date for our New Member Tea. We will mail out invitations as we get closer to the date, but we have chosen 11 December for our New Member Tea, so please mark your calendars. Our location is undetermined right now, but we will update once we have it figured out. We would like to invite all members who have joined since 2019 to celebrate all of our newest members which will include the years lost to the pandemic. Hope to see you then!

Thanks!
Sarah

Library and Rental News

We had hoped that when we moved the day meetings from the small Room 7 to the Gym that we would be able to have the library available during the whole meeting. However, that is not to be. The old library cart was not able to handle the rough terrain into the gym. (For the gory details, see the June newsletter.) On an even lower note, the library won’t be available during the meeting for the evening meeting either, as it is in the gym as well. The library will be available after the day meeting in the hallway as it had been in the past. In the evening, the library will be available from 6:30 to 7 in the hallway in front of the guild closet. I know this is not what we would like. We would like it to be in with the meeting. If someone can come up with a ramping system ….

On the bright side, my father-in-law was kind enough to make us a new cart. It is 3 feet long rather than 4 foot long like the old cart. It also has taller shelves, so no prying items out, and is a little bit deeper to keep things from being knocked off when going through doorways. It should be lighter than the old cart and easier to maneuver. This means our shelf space is somewhat reduced. The Needlework section, as well as the periodicals, Prairie Wool Companion, Weaver’s, Warp and Weft, and Piecework are not on the shelves. If you need an item from these collections, please ask Robin for assistance retrieving it from the closet. The plan is to move to three shorter carts from the two larger, which will give us more shelf space. Now I just need to come up with bribes along with cooler weather so we can get more shelves built.

We also have a few pieces of new equipment for rent and in our tool library. The large donation we received in May not only came with the yarn that was available for sale in June, it came with some new weaving equipment. Now available to rent are a Schacht horizontal warping mill and a 30” Ashford rigid heddle loom. Unlike our other rigid heddle looms, this one is set up for set up for a double heddle option with 3 different reed sizes. New in the tool library are a batik waxing tool and an Incredible Rope Machine. Take advantage of our collection to try before you buy.

If you have read a new or old weaving, spinning, dyeing or other textile book available in our library, please feel free to submit a review to post in the newsletter.
