Virtual Board Meeting
Thursday, May 27, 2021
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
President’s Message
Usually at this time of year many of our members are frantically preparing for the Gathering of the Guilds at the Convention Center. This year they are frantically preparing for the virtual version at www.nwguildsshowcase.com from April 30 – May 2. Be sure to check out the website and find your favorite guilds and artists who will have lots to sell. The over-200 artists have been quarantined in their studios for the last year producing some amazing art. And you don’t have to trek from the parking lot!
As always,
Chris Rossi
PHG President

Deborah Jarchow
Finishing Techniques for Woven Fabric
It’s always good to decide your finishing technique before beginning the project so you can plan for the necessary length. Knowing what your options are can help you make a more informed decision about the best technique for the piece you are weaving. During this presentation Deborah will present many different ways to finish the ends of your woven fabric and give you a taste for future possibilities.

June 10, 2021
Virtual PHG Annual Meeting and Strawberry Social
We will meet virtually to elect officers, vote on the budget, hear a panel discussion on the Guild’s Mannequins, share projects and ideas for the future and visit with other members. (You will need to provide your own strawberries again this year.)
Programs 2021-2022
We’re starting to think about programs for the 2021-2022 program cycle. Have an idea for someone you’d like to see present a program for the guild? Please contact Dan Steves, who will be leading programs for next year.
Workshops
Workshops for the current year are completed or sold out. Your workshop chair is hard at work organizing future workshops for the 2021-2022 year.
Check out the website for the most current information: https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/education/workshops/
If you have any questions, please contact Lynne Fitzsimmons.
Guild News
PHG Website News
We know privacy is a concern for many, so Dan has posted a new page on the website about privacy and your profile information. Read all about it and find out how you can control access to your information here: https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/privacy-and-your-profile/
Having problems using the PHG website menus on your iPad? Try viewing it in Portrait mode instead of Landscape mode! The menus function differently in the two orientations, and users will find that the menus are easier to access and navigate when viewed in Portrait mode. (Thanks, Lynne, for pointing out the problem!)
Wondering how you can get back to the home page on the PHG website? Just click on the blue “Portland Handweavers Guild” at the top of the page! That will always take you back to the home page for the PHG website.
We’re still looking for instructors for our new Instructors page (https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/instructors/). So far there are only 2 instructors listed. Want to add your name to the list? Just fill out the Call for Instructors form.
Membership News
It’s that time of year already. Beginning now we can accept membership renewals for the 2021-2022 fiscal year that starts July 1, 2021. And just a reminder – your membership runs from July 1 to June 30. All memberships are up for renewal on July 1. The only exception is new members who joined after March 1 of this year. If you have any questions or concerns contact the Membership Director at dansteves@gmail.com.
Volunteer Sign-Up Reminder
Remember that Maggie Patterson and Cooki Messmer are planning some PHG outreach activities starting this spring, and going into the summer and fall. They are planning some demonstrations at farmers markets, yarn shops, and other locations to reach out especially to non-weavers who may be interested in learning to weave. They will have a handout with resource information for our guild, weaving equipment and supplies, local teachers, etc. They will set up dates starting April 30-May2 for “Gathering of the Guilds”.
Maggie and Cooki will do some of the demonstrations themselves but are also hoping to generate a list of other guild members willing to volunteer. If you are willing to be on that volunteer call list please email Maggie at mudgepatterson@hotmail.com giving her your email and phone number. They have a table, a canopy, yarn and 2 small looms, including a rigid heddle loom, so you don’t need to bring anything unless you want to. Being cautious about COVID-19 concerns, all volunteers will wear masks and we will not allow folks who stop by to chat to actually try out the looms, but only watch the demos.
If you have any questions, please contact Maggie. At this point they are just creating a list of folks who may be available. As dates arise you may get called. You can say no if the date doesn’t work for you.

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023
The 2023 Conference Committee has been proactively looking at a wide-range of venues. This has been quite a challenge as they must take into consideration everything from the location, size and availability of the venue, as well as the specific needs of the conference. At this time, they are continuing efforts to narrow down the most suitable choices and have not yet determined an exact date or location.
So for now, please continue to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors. The committee will keep you updated on progress toward the 2023 conference in periodic blog posts and on the website as they work on securing a date and location for the summer 2023 ANWG conference.
Stay tuned!
