President’s Message
Being President
It’s that time of year again. No, I don’t mean paying taxes or watching the Academy Awards. This is the time when the current PHG president starts looking for a replacement. “Being president ” has gotten a bad rap. We all imagine that the president must be super-organized, energetic, and someone who only needs 4 hours of sleep a night. And I forgot the part about being wise and able to solve any problem or conflict. Trust me, those are neither necessary nor realistic qualifications.
The only qualification the president needs is to care about the welfare of PHG members. The phrase “Members First, Always” is the guiding mantra. Following that mantra makes decision-making easy. And when you have a wise and energetic Board, as we do now, your back is covered.
Please consider being the next PHG president. It is a decision you will never regret. If you are interested, please email me and we can chat. I look forward to hearing from you.

This lecture/demonstration class offers a window onto one of the best-kept secrets of the weaving world – that you can weave with nothing but threads and a deck of cards! Originating in the Iron Age, this technique is enjoying a surge in popularity lately as it is re-discovered by weavers today. We will discuss the theory, the history, and many of the weaving techniques themselves, and view examples sure to awe and inspire.

Double Rainbow – An Evolution in Color
Jennifer Moore’s work in doubleweave has always focused on the interaction of color between the two layers of cloth. She will show a number of images of her work in doubleweave pickup that play one solid colored layer against a layer in a gradation of a spectrum of colors. In 2016 she began developing a system of color rotations in both the warp and the weft that combine with all of the possibilities for bringing different colors to the surface of the cloth and weaving in multiple blocks. She will show how this idea developed for her and the process that she goes through in designing her textiles in her Double Rainbow technique.

Happy Endings – Finishing Techniques for Woven Fabric
Taught by Deborah Jarchow
Date: Saturday May 15, 2021, two sessions, 9-11am and 2-4pm.
Description: from Deborah: “Do you wonder what more there is to do with the ends of your woven cloth besides fringe? Do you wish for different look on the ends of your scarves? In this workshop you will learn several techniques that can give you alternatives for the ends. Learn how to plan for hemming and about twisting, braiding, adding beads, decorative knotting, and knitting and crochet to the edges as well as some fancy techniques. These alternatives will enhance your weaving skills and give you more options.”
Homework: Warp your rigid heddle or shaft loom 4” wide, set up for plain weave, 60” long with worsted weight yarn, sett at 7.5 or 8 ends per inch.
Materials: Warped loom. About 50 – 75 yards of yarn to use for weft. Sewing needle, tapestry needle, scissors, D or E crochet hook, sized 5 or 6 knitting needle, straight pins, 25 – 30- beads to fit on yarn, dental floss threader (available at most drug stores by dental hygiene products), fusible thread, 30 yards waste yarn (worsted weight acrylic works well), post it notes, shuttle/bobbins.
Maximum of 20 participants.
Twining, Looping, Soumak, Rya, and Inlay Sampler on the Rigid Heddle (or Shaft) Loom (Tapestry Techniques)
Taught by Deborah Jarchow
Date: Sunday, May 16, 2021, two sessions 11am-1pm and 3-5pm (allows time to reset your loom if you took the first workshop)
Description from Deborah: “Learn these wonderful advanced techniques that can take your weaving to the next level. Spend some time making a sampler that includes simple hemstitch, twining, looping, soumak and inlay, which can add textural interest to your weaving projects. During the class you will learn the techniques and then be encouraged to try different yarns and variations to broaden your understanding of these skills. Use these variations to create your own style and increase the artistry of your woven pieces.”
Homework: Warp your rigid heddle or shaft loom with the dk or light worsted weight yarn using a 7.5 or 8 dent reed. The warp should be 88” long and consist of 64 warp threads (32 slots, 32 holes). Spread the warp with waste yarn to even out all warp threads.
Materials: 300 yards dk or light worsted weight yarn for the warp and some weft. This yarn should be strong, non-hairy, solid color, non-stretchy. 200 yards of a different solid color worsted weight yarn for weft. 100 yards each of two different bulky weight yarns. These can be multi-colored or variegated as you can see in the project image. 10 – 15 yards waste yarn (acrylic worsted weight works well), scissors, tapestry needle, measuring tape, 2 brown paper grocery bags, 2 – 3 tubes from inside a paper towel roll, a hair pick or wide tooth comb plus a fork (non-plastic), long (13”-14” straight knitting needles in around sizes 7 – 9 and 13 (these can be shared with a friend), crochet hook size E – G or so (this is helpful but not mandatory), pick up stick 8” wide minimum – or the size of your loom, 2 shuttles (I used 1 boat and 1 stick).
Maximum of 20 participants.

PHG Rental News
After a year at home, are you looking for a new fiber challenge? Maybe you want to try something more portable, or you just want to try out a new tool before investing in one. Check out the newly revamped rental equipment page. (Thank you, Dan!) Try before you buy.
We have a variety of looms and spinning equipment to rent with a low or no monthly rental fee. Are you a rigid heddle weaver considering whether you want to step up to a shaft loom? Try one out. Maybe you are wishing you could take your weaving outside – try out a rigid heddle or tapestry loom. There are also kumihimo looms and a triangle loom. Our loom family has grown this year with three generous donations:
- An 18” 8-harness Dundas table loom. It is a great loom for workshops.
- A 28” Mirrix tapestry loom. This great copper and aluminum tapestry loom with a shedding device can weave a piece up to a 25”W by 59”H.
- A 20” Beka rigid heddle loom with an optional adjustable stand.
The shutdown provided us the opportunity to sort through the miscellaneous equipment that the guild has accumulated over the years. They have been inventoried, organized and photographed. Did you know that PHG had a warping mill? Temples? An auto dent reed hook? And more. They are now available for checkout for a month at a time just like the library books.
And don’t forget that the library has plenty of books and DVD’s available for direction and inspiration.

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023
On August 29, 2020, the 2021 ANWG Conference Steering Committee met via Zoom video conference to discuss the future of the conference. As comments and ideas were put forward, a key issue of concern was the impact of COVID-19 and if we would be able to move forward with the event. After careful consideration, the committee unanimously approved the recommendation to move the conference to the summer of 2023. This decision was made after considering a number of issues regarding the pandemic, mandates for public gatherings, and nationwide health concerns. On September 10 and 11 the ANWG and WeGO boards voted unanimously to concur with the rescheduling recommendation.
For those who are unaware, the 2021 ANWG Conference venue, Willamette University (WU), has been closed to the public since March and conference organizers have been unable to visit the campus. As a result, WU is unable to provide organizers with any certainty about when or if the campus will reopen to visitors or whether the conference in June 2021 would be permitted. These factors and other health risks led to the decision to reschedule the conference to the summer of 2023.
Over the next few weeks the committee will be in close contact with Willamette University to determine if they have availability in their summer 2023 calendar for the conference. Communications will be sent to all parties involved as soon as a new date and possibly a new venue are determined.
We are saddened to reschedule the conference but feel this is the prudent course of action for the ANWG membership and conference guests. Now you have more time to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors! We will keep you updated with our progress toward 2023 in periodic blog posts and on the website. So stay tuned, we’ll be working on moving everything forward and hope you will join us.

Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) is our national weaving organization whose mission is to educate, support and inspire the fiber arts community. Many of us think of Convergence, the biennial international conference, when we think of HGA. The next Convergence will be in Knoxville, Tennessee July 15-21, 2022. (Please check the link for updates on the conference schedule during this uncertain time).
Membership also entitles you to receive the quarterly Shuttle Spindle and Dyepot magazine, guided study opportunities, grants to study or take workshops, fiber resources such as textile kits and multimedia rentals, travel excursions and eligibility for Small Expressions exhibit and the HGA Award given to more than 30 deserving artists each year.

Virtual Gathering of the Guilds 2021

The Gathering of the Guilds is a Go! It’s just a different kind of “go” this year. We’re getting closer to normal but we’re not there quite yet. So, rather than lose our momentum and, perhaps, disappoint our artistically oriented fans, we’re going to go online.
This means lots of changes in how we’ll operate as well as opportunities for all of us to do things differently to promote our fiber art.
It’s early yet and many – well, actually ALL! – details are still being worked out. For now, here is what we know:
The dates: April 30 through May 2, 2021 for the big opening weekend, and the website will stay up for a to-be-determined number of months afterwards.
Fees: A nominal amount to cover advertising.
How will I sell: In any of a variety of ways including but certainly not limited to:
- An online store of your own with links to your website, Facebook page or Etsy shop from your page on the Gathering of the Guilds website;
- Open Studio (if well-ventilated) with set hours;
- Personal deliveries to customers who call or email you;
- Meet ups in parking lots!
So, wind up your creative engines, start building your inventory, and stay tuned. Details will be shared as they develop. People are eager to get back to things as they are and this is a great opportunity to help them and us along.

The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. (HGA) provides grants for artists, students and teachers to take or teach non-accredited classes. This allows HGA members to attend workshops, take classes at conferences and to offer classes to beginning weaving and spinning students. Silvio and Eugenia Petrini Grant – Established in 1994 to honor Silvio and Eugenia Petrini, the fund makes a grant of $300 per individual. The application is open to HGA members for study in a non-accredited program of any skill level. Mearl K. Gable II Memorial Grant-Established in 2000 to honor this generous supporter of the Weavers Guild of the North Shore, Inc. (WGNS) and the fiber art community, the fund awards grants in the amounts of $100 or more per individual. The application is open to all HGA members for study in a non-accredited program of any skill level. Teach-It-Forward Grant – Funded by HGA’s Fiber Trust, the grant awards $500 each year. The application is open to HGA members who teach beginning weavers or spinners in a private studio, shop or school; who are bringing new people to the craft, and who have an innovative plan or proposal.

We’ve invited some of the most respected fiber artists in the field to join us for an hour long conversation where we discuss their artwork and creative journey. Make a cup of your favorite tea and join us as we talk about fiber, creativity, inspiration, process and so much more.
Textiles & Tea espiodes are broadcast via Zoom to the first 500 registrants to sign into the app. Overflow simultaneous live viewing is available on HGA’s Facebook page (a link will be provided in the registration confirmation email). This show travels around the state of Oregon showcasing the fiber arts in our communities. The Title of the show is “Filaments.” A prospectus for submissions will be coming out soon and we hope to have a large response from participating guild members. The WeGO Traveling Show has been well received in the past, so now is the time to begin to plan your Filaments project.

Small Expressions is an annual, international, juried exhibit sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. (HGA) to showcase contemporary small scale works created using fiber techniques in any media, not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction including mounting, framing, or display devices. Juried by Madelyn van der Hoogt, the exhibit will open at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum (June 30 – August 22, 2021) in La Conner, Washington.
