President’s Message

Summer at last! Hope you’re all enjoying the warm weather and long days.  As I write this I’m in San Francisco house/dog sitting for friends, and am wishing I was home instead. That old Mark Twain saying, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco” has more than a little truth to it.

With June in the rear view mirror, we can reflect on the big events of the month, in particular the 2023 ANWG conference in Bend.  It was my first ANWG conference, and from where I sat it was a really good gathering.  I learned a lot and have a new skillset (double weave) in my fiber arsenal.  I made new friends, and really enjoyed the feeling of community. And, we brought home an award for the guild booth at the conference.  Our mannequins and mini-Noh coats won Best in Show!! In addition, several guild members were there to show off full-size coats at the fashion show/Noh Coat procession.  There were several guild members in attendance, and I’m sure there’s lots of stories, so we’ll be scheduling an extra meeting in August so we can get together and share our experiences.

I still have sample warp on the loom, so I’ll end here.  Hope you all have a great summer, and as always, I hope to see you at a meeting soon!

Dan

Upcoming Program

August 10th: ANWG Conference Recap

No meeting in July, and no evening meeting in August.

The conference is over, and there’s lots to show and share. This special meeting will be a chance to talk about our conference experiences, share thoughts and learnings, and celebrate another great conference. If you wove a Noh coat, mini or full-size, please bring it with you to share with the group! And don’t forget those sampler from your workshops and seminars.

Workshop News

Registration for the Supplementary Warp Patterning workshop October 20-22 is open. The workshop is taught by Barbara J. Walker, and this topic rated very highly on the workshop interest survey. There is a HARD REGISTRATION DEADLINE of September 29, 2023.

While the initial workshop cost may appear breathtaking, remember that as more people sign up, the cost to each participant goes down.

Hope to see you there in October!

Loom Sale at DaVinci Arts Middle School

2508 NE Everett Street, Portland, OR

July 11, 2023

A big sale of used floor looms is coming to DaVinci Arts Middle School on Tuesday July 11, from 11 am to 6 pm.  There are over 20 floor looms and lots of miscellaneous equipment for sale.  Bring your big car, van, or pickup truck and be prepared for great bargains. No reasonable offers will be turned down. If you have been wanting a larger loom at a great price, this is the sale for you.

Years ago, DaVinci had a large weaving program.  Now they are in the process of building back the fiber arts program but trying to get rid of larger looms and extraneous equipment to make room for more portable projects.

You will find 36 inch and much larger floor looms, both 4 and 8 harness, some with sectional warping beams. Brands include Schact, LeClerc, Harrisville, Macomber, and Allen. Most looms need cleaning and some maintenance.  In addition, you will find warping boards, shuttles, basketmaking material, dye pots, books, magazines including old Handwovens, needlepoint frames, and miscellaneous.

Drive around to the parking lot behind the school to find the building. Only cash or checks will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the DaVinci Arts Middle School textile arts program.

As part of their community involvement, Portland Handweavers Guild has been helping the fiber arts teacher build the program back and organize this sale. If you have questions, contact Cooki Messmer at cookimessmer@comcast.net

Nordia House, Portland, OR

This exhibition showcases artists’ books and textile pieces by Icelandic artists and visiting artists who have been inspired by the country’s landscapes, people, language and textile traditions. The works in this exhibition are connected through stitching, weaving, knotting, tying, binding, pattern and storyline. The artists have found parallel lives in each other, unintentionally approaching art and life in similar fashions across oceans and between generations.
