President’s Message
We don’t usually meet in August, but since several of us went to the ANWG conference in Bend in June I thought we ought to get together and share our experiences while it’s still fresh in our minds. This will be a day meeting only (sorry, evening-only folks), but we’ll try to record it for those that are interested so you can hear what others thought about the conference.
If you wove a Noh coat, full size or mini, please bring it with you to the meeting. We’d love to get photos of everyone in/with their coats to share on the website. And if you took a workshop and have a sampler to show bring that, too. I know I have one from the workshop I took. I’m actually still weaving on it but should have it off the loom by the time we meet.
Can’t wait to see and hear all that we did in Bend. And, as always, I hope to see you at a meeting soon.
Dan
Upcoming Programs
August 10th: ANWG Conference Recap
No evening meeting in August.
The conference is over, and there’s lots to show and share. This special meeting will be a chance to talk about our conference experiences, share thoughts and learnings, and celebrate another great conference. If you wove a Noh coat, mini or full-size, please bring it with you to share with the group! And don’t forget those sampler from your workshops and seminars.
September 14th: Photographing Your Creations
Our speaker is Dave Hutt (www.davehuttphotography.com), a professional photographer and printer since 1973. His presentation will cover using a digital camera and smartphone, composition, lighting, and printing. Come with all your questions for Q&A with this professional photographer at the end.
Workshop News
Registration for the Supplementary Warp Patterning workshop October 20-22 is open with lots of spots open. The workshop is taught by Barbara J. Walker, and this topic rated very highly on the workshop interest survey. There is a HARD REGISTRATION DEADLINE of September 29, 2023.
While the initial workshop cost may appear breathtaking, remember that as more people sign up, the cost to each participant goes down.
Hope to see you there in October!

Fall Sale
Time for PHG fall sale entries! It’s never too early to start thinking about the sale. This year it will be the weekend AFTER Veterans Day. There are a couple of new items to consider:
– Set up will be Friday evening, Nov 17, from 6-9 pm.
– Booth fees include a slight increase to allow for an advertising budget.
– We’d like 4-5 people to volunteer for publicity as their choice for show job. This is instead of setup/cleanup duties.
– A floor plan of last year’s booth layout is attached. If you’d like the same spot, let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate your request.
– Remember that you must be a current PHG member to participate.
– We must have a signed entry form for everyone: if you’re sharing a booth, both members must submit a form.
More information and entry forms are on the website: https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/archive/sales/fall-sale/
I’m happy to answer any questions/concerns. Email me at: judilee.fitzhugh@gmail.com or leave a msg at 503-759-3721. Looking forward to a great sale this year! Judilee

It is fun to go and answer folks questions about weaving. You can weave on one of their looms, a 4 harness or rigid heddle, or bring your own to demonstrate.
You will receive free entry and parking for the day you demonstrate.
The shifts they set up are 10 to 3 or 3 to 8.

Study Groups
Post ANWG Thoughts
I hope that everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer after the week in Bend at the ANWG conference. One of the takeaways for me in my discussions with other attendees were the study groups they so enjoyed being a part of. That send me thinking about the fact that as Director of Education I have not done my duty in promoting Study Groups. I went back to read the statement on them from our website. https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/archive/education/study-groups/ (I could copy it here but I will let you each read it from there.)
So as Director of Education I would like to extend the Guild’s assistance to person(s) or group(s) that is interested in exploring a topic with others.
As an example, several PHG members attended the Certificate of Excellence (COE) by HGA discussion at ANWG and talked of forming a study group that could support this pursuit. It would be a way of exploring specific techniques and topics that relate to the COE, whether one decides to submit their work or not.
Is there a topic from ANWG that you would like to use as a basis for a study group? Please use PHG and specifically me to see this happen.
Let’s talk soon
