Virtual Board Meeting
Thursday, April 22, 2021
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

President’s Message

Some of us are old enough to remember listening to “The Lone Ranger” while we were washing and drying dishes. Do you suppose we will have fond memories of Zoom and the internet some day when technology has moved on? This month our Zoom offering is a presentation by Jennifer Moore, one of the world’s premier practitioners of doubleweave. Be sure to tune in to Zoom on Thursday, April 8, at 7 pm. Later in the month there will be a virtual Gathering of the Guilds from April 30-May 2 at www.nwguildsshowcase.com. You can tune into it anytime, and even peruse it while you are doing the dishes!

As always,

Chris Rossi
PHG President

Jennifer Moore

Double Rainbow: An Evolution in Color

Jennifer Moore’s work in doubleweave has always focused on the interaction of color between the two layers of cloth. She will show a number of images of her work in doubleweave pickup that play one solid colored layer against a layer in a gradation of a spectrum of colors. In 2016 she began developing a system of color rotations in both the warp and the weft that combine with all of the possibilities for bringing different colors to the surface of the cloth and weaving in multiple blocks. She will show how this idea developed for her and the process that she goes through in designing her textiles in her Double Rainbow technique.

Deborah Jarchow

Finishing Techniques for Woven Fabric

It’s always good to decide your finishing technique before beginning the project so you can plan for the necessary length. Knowing what your options are can help you make a more informed decision about the best technique for the piece you are weaving. During this presentation Deborah will present many different ways to finish the ends of your woven fabric and give you a taste for future possibilities.

Workshops

We’ve got two 1-day zoom workshops presented by Deborah Jarchow in May.

First up, on May 15 is Finishing Techniques for Woven Fabric.

“In this workshop you will learn several techniques that can give you alternatives for the ends. Learn how to plan for hemming and about twisting, braiding, adding beads, decorative knotting, and knitting and crochet to the edges as well as some fancy techniques.”

Then, on May 16 is Twining, Looping, Soumak, Rya, and Inlay – Tapestry Techniques.

“Spend some time making a sampler that includes simple hemstitch, twining, looping, soumak and inlay, which can add textural interest to your weaving projects.”

Each day has two 2-hour zoom sessions, plus time in between for you to work on your project.
These workshops are suitable for both shaft and rigid heddle looms.
The MOST either one will cost is $75; each additional person registering past the minimum lowers the overall cost to all participants.

The cut-off date to decide if the workshop is a go is April 1, but IF the workshop is a go, registrations will be accepted until April 15, or the workshop sells out, whichever happens first (Lynne Fitzsimmons maintains a waiting list).

Read more and register here: https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/education/workshops/
If there are any questions, please contact Lynne Fitzsimmons.

A Message from the PHG Website Administrator

One of the big things that the website admin does is help people with passwords and logins. Now, there’s a page that will tell you all about passwords, including how you can reset your password. Check out the Password Problems page at https://portlandhandweaversguild.org/password-problems/. Questions? Please contact Dan Steves.

A Message from the Membership Director

It’s that time of year already. Starting April 1, 2021 we can accept membership renewals for the 2021-2022 fiscal year that starts July 1, 2021. And just a reminder – your membership runs from July 1 to June 30. All memberships are up for renewal on July 1. The only exception is new members who joined after March 1 of this year. If you have any questions or concerns contact the Membership Director at dansteves@gmail.com.

Speaking of next year, we’re looking for a new Membership Director, or someone who would be willing to be co-director for a year with an eye to becoming the sole membership director at some point. Responsibilities include updating the membership directory PDF file (the online directory maintains itself), processing check renewals, answering membership questions, and welcoming new members to the group. Contact Dan if you’re interested or want more information.

A Message from the PHG President

We are still seeking a new President for the 2021-2022 year. Please consider being the next PHG president. It is a decision you will never regret. If you are interested, please email Chris Rossi, who looks. forward to hearing from you.

A Message from Your Community Involvement Directors

Maggie Patterson and Cooki Messmer are planning some PHG outreach activities starting this spring, and going into the summer and fall. They are planning some demonstrations at farmers markets, yarn shops, and other locations  to reach out especially to non-weavers who may be interested in learning to weave. They will have a  handout with resource information for our guild, weaving equipment and supplies, local teachers, etc. They will set up dates starting April 30-May2 for “Gathering of the Guilds”.

Maggie and Cooki will do some of the demonstrations themselves but are also hoping to generate a list of other guild members willing to volunteer. If you are willing to be on that volunteer call list please email Maggie at mudgepatterson@hotmail.com giving her your email and phone number. They have a table, a canopy, yarn and 2 small looms, including a rigid heddle loom, so you don’t need to bring anything unless you want to. Being cautious about COVID-19 concerns, all volunteers will wear masks and we will not allow folks who stop by to chat to actually try out the looms, but only watch the demos. If you have any questions, please contact Maggie.

A Message from Your Complex Weavers Representative

Past President of Complex Weavers and the Association of Northwest Weaving Guilds Ladella Willams would like to share info with you. If you would like to join Complex Weavers or would like more information please send an email to LadellawilliamsCZZ@gmail.com or text her at 503-729-1704.

Ladella is soliciting submissions for an article on paper weaving as there seems to be much interest, so anyone who is a member of Complex Weavers is welcome to submit information about weaving with paper. Email LadellawilliamsCZZ@gmail.com for more info.

Save the dates July 10-13, 2022 for the Complex Weavers seminars in Knoxville, TN. We hope you will join us there!

PHG Rental News

After a year at home, are you looking for a new fiber challenge? Maybe you want to try something more portable, or you just want to try out a new tool before investing in one. Check out the newly revamped rental equipment page. (Thank you, Dan!) Try before you buy.

We have a variety of looms and spinning equipment to rent with a low or no monthly rental fee. Are you a rigid heddle weaver considering whether you want to step up to a shaft loom? Try one out. Maybe you are wishing you could take your weaving outside – try out a rigid heddle or tapestry loom. There are also kumihimo looms and a triangle loom.

The shutdown provided us the opportunity to sort through the miscellaneous equipment that the guild has accumulated over the years. They have been inventoried, organized and photographed. Did you know that PHG had a warping mill? Temples? An auto dent reed hook? And more. They are now available for checkout for a month at a time just like the library books.

And don’t forget that the library has plenty of books and DVD’s available for direction and inspiration.

Find details and pictures on the PHG rental equipment page. Email requests and questions to Robin by Monday, April 12, for pickup on Thursday, April 15 on the patio off the back parking lot of the Multnomah Arts Center between 10 and 10:30 am.

ANWG Conference Fiber Connections Rescheduled to 2023

The 2023 Conference Committee has been proactively looking at a wide-range of venues. This has been quite a challenge as they must take into consideration everything from the location, size and availability of the venue, as well as the specific needs of the conference. At this time, they are continuing efforts to narrow down the most suitable choices and have not yet determined an exact date or location.

So for now, please continue to weave, spin and create fiber art in the conference colors. The committee will keep you updated on progress toward the 2023 conference in periodic blog posts and on the website as they work on securing a date and location for the summer 2023 ANWG conference.

Stay tuned!
