Safe Rest Village

Eva Douthit and Janis Johnson

Safe Rest Villages represent a step between homelessness and a permanent home to call their own for unsheltered individuals. They provide emotional and physical safety by offering counseling and a lock on the door. Portland now has seven villages, with more in the planning stages.

Eva created the collage of a village by using photographs, botanical print and weaving.

Janis wove the tiny houses and birds on a 32-shaft Louet Megado loom with a computer dobby. The weave structure is Summer and Winter, with 60/2 silk as the warp, 120/2 silk as the tie-down weft, and 30/2 silk as the pattern weft. The silk yarn used in the blue houses was dyed with fresh-leaf indigo grown by Eva.
