Feb Morning Meeting and Program – Passementerie: an endangered yet thoroughly contemporary craft with Elisabeth Ashdown – ZOOM ONLY

Crete, Galoon, frogging and gimp…the mysterious and arcane world of Passementerie is steeped in rich traditions, yet is hardly known about today. Join one of the last remaining Passementerie Artists, Elizabeth Ashdown, to learn about her fascinating, contemporary approach to this heritage art form and hear about how she is giving Passementerie modern relevance.

She will also dive into how passementerie is woven, looms, set up, etc.

About the Speaker

Elizabeth is one of only a few practising hand passementerie artists in the UK. She combines traditional craft with contemporary design to create innovative trims, tassels, and fringes. Her award-winning work has won Best Decorative Touch at the Living Etc Style Awards 2025 and Trim of the Year at the 2025 Homes & Gardens Design Awards. She designed the multiple award-winning Kaleidoscope collection for Samuel & Sons.

Based in London, Elizabeth creates bespoke passementerie for interior designers, fashion designers, and milliners, and develops wall-based artworks using her signature techniques. She’s the author of Passementerie: Handcrafting Contemporary Trimmings, Tassels, Fringes and More and holds an MA in Textiles from the Royal College of Art.

A passionate educator, Elizabeth teaches Passementerie Masterclasses online and in person, and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust ADAM Architecture Scholarship in 2023. She’s launching the Passementerie Club on Patreon later this year—an exclusive membership community dedicated to preserving and teaching this endangered craft.
