River Rocks: Crossways Rung

Leanne Streit

Portland is full of smooth river rocks, many of which are basalt. The Columbia River Basalt Group is the result of flood basalts that were released during volcanic eruptions 17-14 million years ago. This area covers much of Oregon and Washington, including Portland.

Leanne enjoys exploring the combination of fiber with different media and expanding the norms of fiber arts, with the incorporation of heavy objects and painting on handwovens. In this piece she began by selecting interesting rocks. Her sketches focus on the interplay of the fiber and these items where their characteristics such as aggregate types, shapes, colors and other elements are incorporated into the woven panels. She uses various fiber art and craft methods including stitching and beading in this piece.
