Through the exacting process of hand pick-up, I exchange threads between the two layers, building original designs onto the underlying grid. By blending numerous colors together in both my warp and weft and playing one layer against the other, I am able to create a nearly limitless range of subtle color gradations.\n\n\n\nOver the years, I have developed new methods of setting up and weaving doubleweave that I feel make it accessible and understandable for all weavers. Start by sewing together your instruction manual with the most basic stitch. Make a second book using one of the variations: the reinforced corners, the tortoise shell, or the hemp-leaf pattern. Learn about paper grain and how to align the grain to strengthen the book’s spine. Students can purchase a bookbinding tool kit or bring or borrow tools from the teachers. Useful tools and supplies to bring are small scissors, a snap-blade craft knife, a self-healing cutting mat, a metal ruler or straightedge, a pencil/sharpener/eraser, darning needles, needle-nosed pliers.\n\n\n\nBarbara Setsu Pickett is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon where she headed the Fibers Area for 33 years.  The focuses of her research and creative practice are velvet weaving, shibori, natural dyeing, and the book arts.  Among her awards are a Fulbright Research fellowship in Italy, a Rockefeller Bellagio residency, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Gladys Krieble Delmas for Studies in the Veneto fund and Institute of Turkish Studies.  She was the Artist-in-Residence for the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco where she wove Japanese-style velvet and sewed Japanese-style books.   \n\n\n\nShe and her son Michael formed the Mihara Shibori Studio in 2005 and they create highly textured silk scarves in distinctive palettes expanding on the Japanese traditional shibori techniques.  They have taught workshops in Istanbul and Seoul and in October 2016 were invited to participate in the Korean Society of Fashion Business conference and fashion exhibition. \n\n\n\nDATE: Friday November 13, 2026. 9am – 4pm\n\n\n\nLOCATION: Ruthie’s Weaving Studio. 4701 SE 24th Ave Suite Z, Portland, OR 97202\n\n\n\nMATERIALS FEE: $7, to be paid directly to the instructor at the workshop, includes the paper for covers and text bodies, bookbinding threads, bees wax. We will explore the basic principles of tablet weaving as we work through a series of exercises that will take us from simple diagonal lines, then to the geometric 4×4, and its cousin, Coptic diamonds. Finally, we will tackle Sulawesi, which offers the potential for elaborate and elegant designs. While this class is designed for beginners, it is suitable for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the mechanics of tablet weaving.\n\n\n\nThe process of creating textiles brings Stacy joy. Of all the fiber arts she’s done, tablet weaving has captured her heart with the complex possibilities that arise from very simple tools.  She has been a teacher in one form or another for most of her life, and she loves the way a student lights up when a new concept clicks. She aspires in her teaching to make tablet weaving comprehensible and fun. Looking to explore the possibilities of a rigid heddle loom? This workshop will cover both 2 and 3 heddle weaving. You will be looking at threading drafts and profile drafts and discussing how they can be used on a loom with at least 3 shafts. This is an excellent class for shaft loom weavers who are structure nerds because you will create multiple structures (Summer and Winter, False Damask, Tabby, Taquete… etc) by manipulating slot threads while the heddles act as shafts one and two. Carly recommends this workshop for rigid heddle weavers, curious floor loom weavers with a little rigid heddle experience, and weavers curious about shaft switching. You can find more information about Carly’s work at: Love Like Salt\n\n\n\nStudents must provide all tools and materials including a warped rigid heddle loom (8/2 or 10/2 cotton) and three heddles (10 or 12.5 epi). Threading will be done in class with instructions provided in advance. Loom stands are optional. The class is appropriate for beginner/intermediate weavers- students should be able to direct warp a RH loom, weave and finish a successful project in a cotton warp (such as the doubled 8/2). It is tightly woven to an ancient living culture raising tasar, muga, and eri silkworms in remote forests of central and eastern India. Raising wild silkworms, reeling cocoons, spinning fiber, and weaving silk cloth provides sustainable work and a regular income, while protecting the environment, lifting the status of women, and maintaining a traditional lifestyle.  \n\n\n\nIn this Zoom presentation, Karen will share photos and stories captured from weavers, spinners, and silkworm farmers over thirty years of field research, and will transport you into their homes and villages to witness the love and dedication involved in each part of the process from soil to cloth.  \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAll things silk has provided Karen Selk with a thread that binds together travel, research, writing, artwork, educating, and managing a successful business selling silk yarns and fibres for over 50 years.  She has given hundreds of workshops and presentations on silk and weaving worldwide and has written over fifty articles on silk.    Her passion to learn about everything silk has led her throughout Asia and the wild silk forests of India in particular, for more than 30 years.  The culmination of her field research has been published in a book: In Search of Wild Silk: Exploring a Village Industry in the Jungles of India. It is tightly woven to an ancient living culture raising tasar, muga, and eri silkworms in remote forests of central and eastern India. Raising wild silkworms, reeling cocoons, spinning fiber, and weaving silk cloth provides sustainable work and a regular income, while protecting the environment, lifting the status of women, and maintaining a traditional lifestyle.  \n\n\n\nIn this Zoom presentation, Karen will share photos and stories captured from weavers, spinners, and silkworm farmers over thirty years of field research, and will transport you into their homes and villages to witness the love and dedication involved in each part of the process from soil to cloth.  \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nAll things silk has provided Karen Selk with a thread that binds together travel, research, writing, artwork, educating, and managing a successful business selling silk yarns and fibres for over 50 years.  She has given hundreds of workshops and presentations on silk and weaving worldwide and has written over fifty articles on silk.    Her passion to learn about everything silk has led her throughout Asia and the wild silk forests of India in particular, for more than 30 years.  The culmination of her field research has been published in a book: In Search of Wild Silk: Exploring a Village Industry in the Jungles of India.
